A Canadian lass, who has been dubbed “Cocaine Babe”, from the press, was sentenced to a maximum of 8 years in jail for the smuggling of suitcases of drugs into Australia. Melina Roberge, aged 24, was arrested in 2016 following Border Force police successful raided of The Sea Princess, a luxury cruise ship, while it was docked in Sydney, also discovered suitcases full of cocaine in her possession, Australian press reported. On Wednesday, Roberge will be eligible for parole in May 2021, after taking into consideration the time that she’s already served, which to some seems like a slap on the wrist given the amount that she was busted with at the time of arrest and history of moving narcotics around.

“It is a very sad indictment of her relative age group in society to seem to get self-worth relative to posts on Instagram,” Traill said, reported ABC News Reported

“It is sad they seek to attain such a vacuous existence where how many likes they receive are their currency. She was seduced by lifestyle and the opportunity to post glamorous Instagram photos from around the world.” She added: “This highlights the negative influence of social media on young women.”

Even though Traill noted Roberge had a prospect of rehabilitation and accepted her guilt was real, she criticized her motivation for committing the offenses. Throughout her trial, Roberge claimed the cruise was one of her rewards for smuggling drugs which have been part of a $21 million cocaine plot.

She stated she took part in the program to obtain Instagram followers and also to encourage the glamorous lifestyle she portrays on her social networking account. Back in Nov, Isabelle Legace, Roberge’s co was also sentenced to a maximum of seven and a half years in jail. Andrew Tamine, the next co-accused, has pleaded guilty to his participation in the offense and is scheduled to be sentenced later this year.
