A post in the Facebook Group ‘Narinig Ko Sa UP’ is gaining attention after a student shared the grade standing of his entire class. What’s shocking about it is that out of 33 students, only 1 person passed.

With UP’s passing rate of 60% or equivalent of 3.0 or tres, only one student achieved this mark. The other 30 students failed getting a 5.0, while 2 reached the conditional passing of 4.0, which gives them chance to take a removal exam determining whether they will pass or fail.

Apparently this happened in UP Los Baños for the subject ENSC 21 or ‘Mathematical Methods in Engineering’. According to the poster, this is a dreaded class for everyone in the College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology.

Meanwhile, netizens questioned whether classes like this, where most of the students fail, are due to the shortcomings of the students who didn’t study or whether it’s the professor at fault for either giving very difficult exams or not teaching his students properly.

Here are the reactions from netizens:

“This is not a good manifestation. If almost all got 5.0’s it only shows that almost all students also did not understand the lesson quite well. It’s safe to infer that this is already teacher factor.”

“But I dont think this is a laughing matter. If half of the class failed, the instructor should have sensed that somewhere in the middle, and see from there how to help people pass. I believe that education should create a highly supportive environment.”

“some profs thought that since many of his/her students failed he/she is highly intelligent and has a very high standard… but the simple truth is..he/she is a lousy teacher…I have teacher way back before all you were born in Calculus Math 28 UPLB.. We are 2 sections with about 70-80 students.. our professor passed the 4 of us — 2.25 highest, then 2.5, one 2.75 and one 3 ( I am that person) and fives to the rest.. The students (led by those who passed) ask for reconsideration but the prof says that the only consideration he can give was to give a grade of 4 (allowed during our time) which the prof to 8 more students so 12 were either passing or borderline.. then that summer many of those who failed did not enroll because the same teacher was handling the subject… lo and behold he passed all the 40 students who enrolled that summer…”

“Mga anak, isko at iska kayo, made of hard stuff. Panindigan UP di sumusuko, lolo pang lumalaban! Lilipas din to.”

“Normal na ata yan kahit sinong ilagay na instructor haha.. . Panahon ko pa eh matunog na ang 11 at 21 haha”
